Frequently Asked Questions
Which program should I choose?
Both 1:1 and group teaching drive up your child’s reading progress.
If you prefer your child to have full personal attention, then the 1:1 teaching is your best option. It will provide complete personalised planning and teaching for your child.
Group teaching is also personalised and has the added benefit of having your child interact with other children at their same reading level so they can support and learn from each other.
Upon completing the free reading assessment, a detailed report will be sent to you with recommended options for your child’s current reading skills and we can advise which program might be a better fit.
How many lessons a week should I buy for my child?
We recommend short 30 minute lessons, at least twice a week to hold a child’s attention and focus and to ensure the highest progress. Upon completing the free reading assessment, a detailed report will be sent to you with recommended options for your child’s current reading skills.
What if my child knows all their sounds, do I need to sign them up for extra teaching?
Phonics not only teaches the sounds. Our reading assessment will tell you if your child knows the sounds and if they know how to sound them out to read words and how to split up the sounds for spelling. Phonics is not only about reading, but also about writing. Can your child apply their sounds knowledge into reading and writing? These are very important skills that must also be addressed.
Who will be my child’s teacher?
Each week you will get the same teacher (British curriculum trained with over 20 years of classroom and leadership experience). This consistency will help your child form a good learning relationship with the teacher, who will be able to adapt and personalise each individual lesson.
When are the teaching sessions scheduled?
Group teaching will be twice a week for 5 weeks on the same dates and times each week.
With 1:1 teaching, you can schedule your lessons with the available dates and time on the calendar.
Each teaching session is 30 minutes long (which is the optimal duration for your child’s focus and learning).
What will my child learn in each phonics lesson?
Your child will learn the essential skills required for reading and writing in each lesson.
Each lesson consists of the following:
- Introducing new sounds
- Reinforcing sound knowledge
- Blending (sounding out to say and read a word)
- Segmenting (split up a word into their sounds for spelling)
- Practicing their skills.
- Applying their knowledge into reading and writing.
Each lesson progresses in complexity (systematic).
What ages are Phonics2Read lessons suitable for?
All ages. This program is for children who need help with their reading skills, whether they are 5 or 9 years old.
Is Phonics2Read suitable for children who aren't native speakers and where English is a Second or additional language?
Yes! This program is perfect for children of all ages where English is not their native tongue or spoken at home. Phonics2Read will enhance their English fluency as well as their reading and writing skills. Mastering Phonics is fundamental and the first skill children should master when trying to learn English.
Is Phonics2Read suitable for children with specific learning needs?
YES 100%. Many children come to us with a specific learning need such as dyslexia, autism spectrum disorder or ADHD. They are often left behind by their schools, but we can make a difference for them.
Our founder, Natalie Hutchison has made a difference for hundreds of children with different learning needs throughout her 20 years of classroom and leadership experience. They have benefitted from her personalised teaching, and philosophy where they were not left behind, but encouraged to grow and often prosper.
The impact often was more than their parents believed or dared to hope. No longer left behind, they often caught up or even surpassed their peers in a matter of months in their reading and writing.
Will my child enjoy the lessons?
These lessons are nothing like a reading app or game where a child must click away finding some sound jumping on the screen. A child may enjoy this ‘game’ but does it teach your child the needed skills? Phonics2Read lessons are repetitive, engaging and really does have impact on your child’s learning. Your child won’t just sit there listening to the teacher talk and talk, they will engage and enjoy the experience. They will start seeing progress and gain confidence each week and the bond with the teacher will strengthen.
Your child will be treated with respect and encouraged to stretch and grow.
They will enjoy the entire learning experience and bring that positive attitude to the rest of their school work and experience.
What will my child need?
Your child will need a quiet area without distractions, including a computer and Internet access to attend the live video conference. The only materials needed will be a pen and paper or a pen and whiteboard for the writing activities.
Will Phonics2Read solve my child’s reading challenges?
Yes! Our program is evidence-based and we use approaches that have been successfully applied in the classroom for 20 years. Personalised and effective teaching, with tailored and flexible lessons to propel your child to reach their fullest potential.
How does Phonics2Read differ from other tutoring services?
We implement what has worked in the classroom for thousands of children over 20 years. This means lessons personalised for your unique child and which provide them the foundation to become much better readers and writers and to enjoy it.
Many other tutors will create one off lessons to tutor for the hour but will not think about the before or after the lesson and miss out on the progression needed for the child.
We specialise in one area…. reading and how to successfully teach it, and we bring our full expertise in this field. We dedicate 100% of our time ensuring we have the best teaching, approaches and research to ensure your children become confident and fluent readers – and enjoy it.
Do you provide lessons for other subjects like maths?
No. We are currently focusing on reading and writing only. We believe your child will benefit more from our concentrating on specific areas than trying to offer a bit of something to everyone and end up offering nothing.
